THE ORIGINS OF A WORD WITCH

Hello, and welcome to blog. My name is Brittany Rose, and I like to think of myself as a word witch, someone who creates worlds with words and shifts reality with intention.

I’ve been writing and consuming stories since I was a young girl. I don’t remember many projects from elementary school, but I do remember being given a blank hardcover book, where I got to create a story and draw pictures to match it. That silly little project in second grade unlocked something in me I hadn’t realized could be possible: I could write my own books.

I grew up in a family of readers, my Dad is more than a little bit of a book dragon (hoarder). My parent’s household is filled with shelves of books, piles of books on most available surfaces, and a basement full of boxed up books I’ve claimed as my inheritance. When I was little, my family would sit in the living room together to read aloud stories of magic like The Hobbit and The Chronicles of Narnia. I was also obsessed with American Girl books and went to my first author signing to get my Addy books signed by Connie Porter.

Writing is my passion, creating characters and worlds out of thin air is my absolute favorite thing to do. Being in the story's flow, and watching it play out in my mind is enthralling. I love writing and I pour my heart and soul into my books.

MY BOOKS

I have a thousand ideas for books (that might be a slight exaggeration, but I do seriously have a lot of half-baked outlines written). In 2018 I started getting ideas for what would become the Lunar Soul Cycle. I wrote the ideas in journals, plotted, planned, but never did anything with the ideas until in 2020, when we were all home because of COVID. I started watching indie authors talk about writing on YouTube. From there, I learned about story structure and how to take my ideas and plug them into a format that would tell the story of my heart.

I’ve published the first two books of the Lunar Soul Cycle, Maiden’s Light and Mother’s Light. The last book in this series, Crone’s Right, has been drafted and is currently being edited. I’m also currently drafting another book, the first in what I believe will be a duology. Although I am not ready to talk about this project, I can promise you it will have some witchy elements to it. I am incapable of writing a novel without magic.

I’ve also written two non-fiction books Align and Bloom and Opening to Love. However, those books I will talk about on my other Substack through my Phases of Growth brand. Phases of Growth is my holistic business, where I offer therapeutic services, programs, and resources for personal and spiritual development.

NANA’S SONG

If you want to get a taste of my writing before checking out my books, or if you want to read some more from the Lunar Soul Cycle, sign up for my newsletter, so that you get these posts sent directly to your email, and I'll send you a short story called Nana’s Song. It takes place before Maiden’s Light, so there won’t be any major spoilers. You'll also get a copy of some entries from my personal grimoire. Subscribe to my Substack here.

FAVORITE BOOKS

I believe in authors supporting other authors, so I intend to regularly share a book recommendation from an author I love and want to support.

If you haven’t read Tracey Deon’s Legendborn, what are you even doing with your life? I read the first book in the series after completing my first draft of Maiden’s Light, and in the first few pages I noticed some similarities to the story I had written, but the similarities are surface level and diverge quickly.

Legendborn weaves Arthurian legends with Southern Black heritage and the magic of Rootcraft. I love the characters, and the themes around family, grief, generational trauma, and reclaiming power are poignant. This is a series I look forward to reading again and recommend to anyone who will listen. It is a YA story, which I personally love, but even if you are not typically a YA reader, I encourage you to check this series out. The world building, mythology, and magic systems are rich, complicated, and diverse. 10/10 love this series! If you've read it, let me know what you think.

Thanks for being, and be sure to check out my Substack, Pinterest, and YouTube!
